years ago, our staff now totals 10,000. From the birthplace of our Company in the Loire
valley, we have successfully expanded our activities worldwide.
The importance of high-technology industry
to a nation
Discovering truly creative new drugs - such
as France is capable of doing - is the province of the few.
Only five nations in the world are currently capable of both creating and developing
drugs.
The pharmaceutical industry must be recognized as a state-of-the-art industry, one of
utmost value for the service it provides, as well as a source of dignity, prestige, and
wealth for those nations who understand its complex nature and let it develop and prosper.
The pharmaceutical industry in France is a state-of-the-art industry just as important as
the computer or aerospace industries.
A job-creating industry
Between 1982 and 1992, in contrast
to a global trend towards layoffs, jobs in the pharmaceutical industry in France have
increased by 17%.
This trend has essentially concerned skilled jobs, due to the introduction of new
production techniques and steadily rising technological standards.
The number of researchers has more than doubled over the past twenty years, from 5,090 in
1970 to 11,936 in 1991, according to data from the French Ministry of Research.
